Play is often seen as a frivolous time squeezed in between academic work. In this session, we will explore the nature of play and why it is the most valuable vehicle for learning in the early years. We will define play, the natural schemas in play and the science behind why play is learning. Our speaker, Lakisha Reid has worked in the field of Early Childhood for 24 years. She has held positions as Kindergarten Enrichment Specialist, Center Director, Lead Teacher, and is currently the owner of Discovery Early Learning Center. She continues to study play and child development and has founded Play Empowers an advocacy group poised for sharing the power of play. Kisha is also the co-host of Dirty Playolodist podcasts and a staff trainer and correspondent on Playvolutions Headquarters with Jeff Johnson of Explorations Early Learning. My work has been featured in several books. The Culture of Childhood by EmilyPlank, Rethinking The Classroom Landscape by Sandra Duncan, and Action Art by Mary Ann Kohl.
